Final Day Saterday 28 August 2009
Girls Category:
And the winner is …
Kelsey Mac Donald !
After having digested a disappointing 3rd round of 78, Kelsey played brilliant golf in the third round. She was relegated in the second flight, playing ahead of her direct opponents who were indeed challenged from the very beginning. After the first hole, Kelsey was already joint leader. She made few mistakes and was compensating these almost instantly with a birdie on the next hole. On the back nine, Maria Federica made a double bogey at the tenth and another bogey at the 12th whilst Kelsey was making birdie-par-par, adding another birdie on the 13th and another one at the 16th.
At the 18th she hit a huge drive which found the fairway bunker at 50 yards of the flag, played an impressive recovery but releasing the pressure too soon, finished with her only 3 putt of the day. She finished with a 5 strokes lead on Maria Federica Costantini and a 7 strokes lead on Anaïs Maggetti from Switserland.
In the boys category, the first dramma of the day was played on the first two holes: Yannick Bludau, who had played so nicely for 3 rounds, started bogey-bogey when Victor Perez was starting eagle-birdie.
Suddenly the 5 strokes lead had disappeared and both players were sharing the lead at 5 under. Thomas Elissalde started less impressively but was just adding quitely birdies to pars and pars to birdies, coming out in 32 and joining the leaders at 4 under at the turn.
Then the Spanish, Marcos Pastor Rufian, holed his second shot for an eagle 2 at the 10th and we had 4 players at 4 under. Was the pressure too big for Bludau? He lost the Tournament at the 15th hitting his second shot into the woods and having to take a drop to finish with a double bogey. He would add two more double bogeys on 17 and 18 ending up out of contention. At the start of the 18, Perez and Elissalde were at 4 under and both made par.
Marcos who had lost contact with the leaders with a bogey at 14, drove the green and made a birdie to force the play off.
On the first hole, all players made a birdie, although in different styles, but on the second, followed by a large crowd, Elissalde was imperial:
On this long par four, with the flag at the top of the green, he hit a majestic second shot at 3 feet of the cup while his two opponents were missing the green, unable to recover in 2 shots. Thomas only had to sweep his last put into the hole and the victory was his !
In the Tournament of Nations, thanks to the good performance of Marcos Ruffian, the Spanish Boys took the Cup overtaking Ireland in the very last holes.
The Italian girls were able to maintain their one stroke lead on Denmark and could go back home with the Cup !
